With all Australian teams chasing the Fijian Drua, there is a new crop of talent ready to take that next step.

Rugby.com.au polled all five captains from the Australian sides for the breakout star to watch from each side in the 2024 competition.

NSW Waratahs - Waiaria Ellis

“She’s 16 at the moment and slid into that ten spot with Arabella McKenzie, watching their relationship grow at the moment has actually been beautiful.

“Bella has really taken her under her wing and already taught her so much but the way ‘baba’ is so excited and taking it both hands with the talent that we saw with that amazing try against the Brumbies and Japan, she is such a talent.

“With the likes of Arabella McKenzie in that position who is such a talented athlete, I’m really excited to see the relationship group and hopefully eventually lead into that international space.

“She’s actually insane, I can’t talk about her highly enough. She and a few girls coming through are the future of the game and I’m extremely excited.” - Piper Duck

Queensland Reds - Shalom Sauaso

“She played in the Tahs trial in her first 15s game and I was thinking ‘That kid’s going to take my job’

“She’s only shown bits and pieces of what she can do. Imagine what she can do later on with some caps under her belt.

“She carries hard, big tackles, she’s a mini-me!" - Cecilia Smith

Melbourne Rebels - Harmony Vatau

“This is her third Super Rugby W season and she started off very green and quiet but she still had all this raw talent.

"I think this year with a few new recruits and she’s floated between inside and outside (centre), I think that will allow her to get her comms up

“I think having two experienced players like surrounding her in the backline, I reckon she’ll have a really good season." - Mel Kawa

ACT Brumbies- Ashlea Bishop

“She’s been in the Wallaroos PONI squad for a bit now so this year might be good for her with that extra experience and training

“She’s done really well in pre-season and earned herself a (vc) spot in our trial last week.

"It’s a testament to her work ethic and knowing she’s actually capable of it." - Siokapesi Palu

Western Force -  Samantha Wood

"She’s been one of our young nines in our system since she was 15 or 16.

“She’s had some unfortunate back-to-back injuries that has limited her to 20 minutes last season.

“She’s gone back to NZ to place minutes under her belt for Farrah Palmer Cup and she’s come back pretty confident and ready to hit the ground running.” - Trilleen Pomare
