They qualified for the final after beating series leader South Africa and Samoa, booking a re-match with the All Black Sevens after their pool defeat.

In a tense encounter, it was Henry Paterson who produced one of the finest performances by an individual in a final, scoring a double to take the game to golden-point.

With the game on the line, Australia won the ball back from the restart, with Corey Toole breaking away to find Paterson for his hat-trick and the game-winner.

“I’m just so proud of the performance from our boys,” captain Nick Malouf said after the match.

“We spoke about getting to work and putting in a tradesmen-like performance and some of the efforts throughout the day, I can’t be prouder of everyone’s effort.

“We’ve worked so hard for this so I’m glad we’re finally got the reward that I feel like we’ve deserved.

The win vaults Australia into second place in the World Series rankings ahead of the final leg in Los Angeles, just two points behind South Africa.

“We’ve still got LA to go but it’s a good result for all the hard work we’re putting in," Malouf added.

“This is the first Cup final that I’ve or anyone in this group has won. We looked at some photos of ‘Chucky’ (James Stannard) winning it in 2010 through the week so we knew it was possible so to come out here and do it is incredible.”

Australia 19 defeated by New Zealand 24

Australia have fallen valiantly to New Zealand 24-19 to kick off the London Sevens.

Matt Gonzalez answered an early NZ try before they hit the front via Brady Rush. Henry Paterson's try after the siren ensured it was just a two point margin heading into the break.

Caleb Tangitau restored the lead for the All Black Sevens as they looked to avenge their defeat to Toulouse, however, captain Nick Malouf's try with just 90 seconds levelled it up.

With time running out, Leroy Carter finished off a great move to seal the win for the Kiwis and break Australian hearts

Nick Malouf picked up where he left off in the opener, crossing in the first 60 seconds. He was followed over by replacement Josh Turner as they took a 12-0 lead.

Ben Dowling was yellow carded just before the break, allowing the Canadians back into the contest at the break.

However, John Manenti's men were too strong as Corey Toole and Maurice Longbottom scored two late tries to seal the win.

Australia 28 defeated France 19

Corey Toole got the side off to the perfect start as he scored inside 30 seconds. Matt Gonzalez followed him over as the Australians looked for revenge after Toulouse.

Nick Malouf capped off an impressive first half with a try on the siren. France then produced two back-to-back tries to set up the grandstand finish. Maurice Longbottom then stepped up to create something out of nothing to find Ben Marr.

Josh Turner then produced an epic try-saver to maintain the lead before France added a consolidation try

Australia 21 defeated South Africa 17

Australia have pulled off an epic 21-17 victory over Series leaders South Africa.

The Blitzboks only need to finish third or higher to wrap up the series and looked well on their way after 17 unanswered points. However, the Australians refused to give up and found a try late in the half via Ben Dowling.

With the game and the Series in the balance, up stepped Henry Paterson. Paterson took the contest over, scoring a double to get John Manenti's side in front.

Australia 19 defeated New Zealand 14

Australia have claimed their first title win over New Zealand in nearly 20 years, defeating them 19-14 in a golden-point thriller.

In a tense first half, both teams' defence held strong as they failed to find a way through. A great tackle from Nathan Lawson and counter-rucking from Josh Turner caused a turnover just before the break, with Henry Paterson capitalising on a Ben Dowling break to score the opener.

New Zealand hit back straight after the break with two quick tries, before Paterson streaked away for his second, breaking a couple of defenders as he raced over from inside his own half.

The All Blacks Sevens hunted for the game-winner but an excellent cover tackle from Paterson put Caleb Tangitau into touch to send the game to golden point.

From here, Australia won the restart and Corey Toole sprinted away, with Paterson capping off his incredible game with the match-winner
