The Safeguard Global ACT Brumbies have bolstered their ranks at fly half with the signing of Tane Edmed from NSW Waratahs.
Edmed, 24, moves to Canberra on a two-year deal, having appeared 52 times for the Waratahs in Super Rugby Pacific, scoring 254 points.
The Sydney-born playmaker was delighted to sign on with the Brumbies and is looking forward to getting going in the nation’s capital.
“I’m super excited to be joining such a strong and consistent organisation in the Brumbies,” Edmed said.
“My development as a rugby player is first and foremost and the Brumbies is a place that seems to make all their players better.
“I can’t wait to get down to Canberra and get stuck in.”
Edmed began playing his rugby at Sydney’s Trinity Grammar College before rising through the age ranks at Eastwood Rugby Club, where he would go on to steer his team into a Shute Shield Grand Final in 2020.
He had made his Waratahs debut earlier that year in Super Rugby AU and went on to have a breakout year at the club in 2022, guiding his team to a famous 24-21 victory over the Crusaders at Leichhardt Oval in April that year.
The Sydney-born stand-off also made an enormous impression for North Harbour in New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship in 2024, scoring 137 points in 10 games, including four tries.
Edmed made his Wallabies debut against Ireland in the final game of their Spring Tour last year. He will compete with Declan Meredith for a starting berth at 10 at the Brumbies, with Noah Lolesio and Jack Debreczeni set to leave the club in the off season.
Head coach Stephen Larkham is eager to see the impression Edmed can make on his team when he arrives in the nation’s capital.
“We’re delighted to sign Tane in what we see as the prime of his rugby career,” Larkham said.
“When he’s been given the opportunity to play, he has delivered and shown what a good footballer he is.
“We believe Tane can develop his game further in Canberra and will be a great fit within the team. We’re really looking forward to working with him.”
