Argentina captain Julian Montoya was beaming with pride after his side's maiden win over the British & Irish Lions.

The 28-24 victory in Dublin adds another scalp to Los Pumas' remarkable run of form over the past 12 months, which includes the Wallabies, All Blacks, Springboks and France.

Montoya, who was backing up just six days from the Premiership Final, praised his side's commitment to the challenge as they held out several late chances for the result.

"It was a short week for us. We just had two training on pitch and I'm super proud of the team," he said post-match.

We spoke about leaving where we finished in November, and trust each other, and knowing that the game wasn't going to be perfect, but I think that we showed the fight that we have in us, and we fight for each other through the 80 minutes.

"We have three guys that make their first game with this jersey, which is the prettiest one of all, so I'm really happy and proud of the team."

"The last time Argentina played against the Lions was in 2005, so it was 20 years ago, and we spoke about today, we were the lucky ones, but this is for Argentinian rugby because we've been doing things right."

"It is the only game that you need to be invited to play, and we received it with great honour, and it was a privilege to play. We need a bit of history today, but this is for the Argentinian rugby."

The match was the eighth time in history Argentina had played the Lions, with current coach Felipe Contepomi starting at flyhalf in their last encounter in 2005, which ended in a 25-all draw.

It was another number ten in Tomas Albornoz who was the star of the show with 16 points, including a try late in the first half whilst having a hand in another.

Albornoz relished the opportunity to go against some of the best players in the world as Los Pumas cemented their status as one of the best teams in the world.

"We talk all the week about this amazing opportunity we have. We came here and we have done a great job, so I'm very happy for these guys," he added.

"I'm very happy. There's a lot of players playing in Europe, playing in different places around Europe but there's a lot of guys back playing club in Argentina and some new caps on the bench tonight. It was a really exciting time for them."
