They've known for a while who they'll play but now the Australian Sevens teams know exactly how their Olympic tournaments will begin, with the official schedule release on Wednesday night.

In two three-day tournaments, the Aussies will feature on every day, with the world number one women's team opening the country's account on Sunday August 7 at 2:30am AEST against Colombia on Sunday August 7 2:30am AEST, with matches against Fiji (August 7, 7:30am) and the USA (August 8, 2:30am) to make up their pool matches.

The women's quarter-finals start from 6am on Monday August 8 and if Australia lives up to its ranking, the women could be playing off for a gold medal on Tuesday August 9 at 8am.

The men's competition kicks off a day after the women's wraps up, with the Aussies taking on France at midnight on Wednesday August 10, before matches against Spain (5am August 10) and South Africa (August 11, 12:30am).

The knockout stages ramp up with quarter-finals from 6am AEST on Thursday August 11, with the gold medal match closing off the competition at 8am on Friday August 12.

France and Spain will open the entire tournament, signalling the return of rugby to the Olympics and the debut of the shortened format of the game at the quadrennial event.

The Australian Men's and Women's Sevens teams will be officially named in Sydney on Thursday July 14, with both groups undergoing intense training camps in recent weeks.
