The Wallaroos are looking to avenge their opening O'Reilly Cup defeat to the Black Ferns as they prepare for Saturday's second Test.

The squad made the trip to Hamilton on Wednesday with memories of June's 50-0 defeat still fresh in their mind.

They came out afterwards with a thumping win over the USA, with assistant coach Scott Fava confident the team has grown since at their new Ballymore base.

“They really took us to task in Redcliffe,” Fava said. “We’re going to see a really abrasive, skilful group that will come at us so we need to be on top of what we do well and get our work rate very high to match our intent with our gameplan.

“…We’ve seen them in action over the past (Pac Four) campaign so we understand what this new Black Fern group is about and doing under a new coach and regime. Nothing has really changed, they just have individuals that do it really well so we’ve got to take them out of what they like and they are comfortable.

“We have that understanding of what’s coming at us, we need to take the opportunity.”

It will be a special Test for Kiwi-born flyhalf Carys Dallinger, returning to their place of birth to face his former teammates.

“I’m always up for the challenge and really excited to be playing in front of my friends and family with my new Wallaroos family," she said.

Dallinger revealed they have been working on the mental side of the game as they hunt for their first win over the Kiwis.

“I think we’ve taken a lot from that Redcliffe game and we’ve been working for the last two months towards something really positive," she added.

“Training has been pretty intense. There’s been a lot of fight and purpose put into this camp. We’ve had a lot of conversations with our mental skills coach who’s trying to mentally prepare us for that tough match.”

The match will serve as their final hit-out before the inaugural WXV tournament.

Competing in WXV 1, they will open the tournament against top-ranked England on October 20 before facing France (October 28) and Wales (November 3)
