The Wallabies' horror injury luck has continued with lock Matt Philip suffering a ruptured ACL.

Philip suffered the injury during training, mere hours before the side was set to head to Europe for the Spring Tour.

The SMH are reporting it occurred after he fell during a lineout drill, ruling him out for the rest of the year and likely a significant portion of Super Rugby Pacific in 2023.

Philip had only just returned from a sternum injury, missing the 40-14 defeat to the All Blacks at Eden Park.

It continues the horror run of injuries for the Wallabies, already missing Izack Rodda due to a foot injury whilst Darcy Swain is unavailable for the first two Tests against Scotland (October 30) and France (November 6) after his six-match ban.

"Feeling for you MP. We're all right behind you mate and can't wait to see you back out there next year," the Wallabies said in a statement.

Philip joins fellow forwards Angus Bell (toe) and Rob Leota (Achilles) on the sidelines for the season-ending tour, kicking off with Scotland on October 30.

Will Skelton has been included but is not available for selection for the Scottish Test under World Rugby's regulation nine given the Test falls outside the window clubs must release their players.

Dave Rennie has several options both at home and abroad to choose from.

Queensland Reds lock Ryan Smith impressed for Australia A whilst NSW Waratahs forward Ned Hanigan was one of several new additions to the 36-player Wallabies squad.

Along with this, there is one overseas slot still free under the current rules, which may see Lukhan Salakaia-Loto earn a call-up after he was added to camp for the England series in July.

The Wallabies were embracing the five back-to-back Tests as the perfect World Cup build-up, playing the top two nations France and Ireland as well as Pool rivals Wales and Italy.

"Australians love an underdog," Wallabies captain James Slipper told reporters on Wednesday.

"But we want to go over there with the expectation to win as well. We're not going over there to come second. There's no good me standing here in front of you talking about what I want to do. It's about going over there and doing it.

"You kind of want that momentum running into a World Cup. For us, it's a great opportunity to start that momentum now."
