Wallabies fullback Tom Wright will likely miss the rest of the season after suffering an ACL injury.

Wright went down in the opening minutes of Sunday's 30-22 defeat to the Springboks in Cape Town, clutching at his knee.

The Brumby was taken from the field shortly afterwards, with the fullback in agony as he watched on.

Wallabies officals confirmed the worst fears for Wright, who will return to Australia for surgery.

"Scans have confirmed fullback Tom Wright suffered an ACL injury in last night's Test against South Africa in Cape Town," the statement said via social media.

"He will return home with the group today to see specialists this week."

The blow is a massive loss for the Wallabies, with Wright emerging as one of the premier fullbacks in the game.

The 28-year-old was one of their best during the British & Irish Lions series, backing that up with a try against the Springboks in last week's famous win.

Coach Joe Schmidt has a number of options to replace Wright, with the likes of Max Jorgensen and Andrew Kellaway spending time at the back at Super Rugby level.

Alternatively, it could push Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii to fullback, where he plays for the NSW Waratahs.

It caps off a nightmare fortnight of injuries for the Wallabies, who were decimated during the defeat.

Scrumhalf Nic White and centre Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii were both concussed in the first half, while prop Taniela Tupou appeared to have dislocated his pinky finger shortly before the break.

It came after kipper Harry Wilson (knee), James Slipper (concussion) and Dylan Pietsch (broken jaw) were all injured in the Rugby Championship opener in Johannesburg, with Ben Donaldson ruled out before the game.
