‘Steep learning curve’: Schmidt backs Toole, returning cavalry to deliver strong Cape Town performance

Joe Schmidt is set to make several bold calls as the Wallabies strive to taste victory in Cape Town for the first time since 1992, headlined by fresh face Corey Toole.

Injuries will see Tom Robertson come into the starting side in place of James Slipper, while Fraser McReight will become the 91st player to captain the side while Harry Wilson recovers from a knee injury.

However, the big talking points come in the form of two Brumbies, with John Eales medalist Rob Valetini a welcome return to the side, while Toole will make his long awaited debut on the wing, swapping out for the injured Dylan Pietsch.

“Corey is a great young kid,” Schmidt said to reporters on Thursday night during the squad announcement.

“This will be a big, steep learning curve for him… You've got to become pretty proficient around the contact area, and Corey's worked really hard at that.

“He's a taller young man, but, but very athletic as well. So that aerial contest will be very competitive again. It's something we didn't win at the start of the test match.

“It's good to have Rob [Valetini] back and I'm sure he'll acquit himself really well.

“I think his selection in the Wallaby side is probably one of the most consistent things over the past four or five seasons. And this season, there's been a little bit of a hiatus where he hasn't been there and it's nice to have him back.”

The Springboks are set to make some bold calls themselves, making ten changes to the side that lost in Johannesburg.

However, Schmidt isn’t taking their hosts lightly, also believing that confidence can be dented if the Wallabies get complacent after last week’s win.

“I think Rassie [Erasmus] has done really well growing strength and depth in his squad,” Schmidt said of the Boks.

“t's something we're trying to build, you need to have that strength and depth. Otherwise, you're always a little bit vulnerable.

“For us at the moment, we're obviously on our fourth number ten that we've used. That's always going to be a challenge so if you have integrated a number of players in a number of positions, I think he has the flexibility to be able to pick very strong sides regardless of how many changes he makes.

“We can't wait for the Springbok to bring their game. We've got to kick off with our game a lot better than we did last week. We've talked more about that and tried to do more about that than look that far back. It's nice to know it.

“[Johannesburg was] good for our confidence. But we know that confidence can be lost pretty quickly. We know that improvement is never linear. You may get an upswing and at the end of that upswing, maybe a trench.

“We’ve just got to make sure that we try to stay as balanced as we can, as well-prepared as we can and try to just keep that level of performance that we found at times in the second half.”

McReight’s inclusion as captain has also seen as a means of maintaining continuity for Schmidt, with the number seven taking over the role last week after Wilson was forced from the field with a knee injury.

“[With] Fraser, part of the decision was he finished the game last week as captain,” the Wallabies coach explained.

“So it was almost the continuity that I felt he finished the game well. He was captain in the Under 20s when he was in the age group arena. He's a quiet leader.

“I don't think we don't need someone who's remonstrating or saying a lot. We just need someone who's going to demonstrate the right performance on field that other people can follow.

“I think Fraser has demonstrated that.”
