James Slipper has faced Argentina enough times to know what's coming the Wallabies' way on Saturday afternoon.

Felipe Contepomi has rung the changes following last week's 28-24 thriller and will be hell-bent on retaining the Puma Trophy and ensuring skipper Julian Montoya tastes success in his 50th Test as captain.

Speaking ahead of Australia's sold-out clash at Allianz Stadium, Slipper paid tribute to Los Pumas and backed his side to continue their week-on-week growth.

"We know Argentina will bounce back. They're a quality team," Slipper told reporters in Sydney.

"They've beaten the All Blacks, they've beaten the Lions this year. They took us right to the final whistle, they pretty much led the whole game.

"It's not like we're happy with how we performed - we're obviously happy with the result - but we have a lot of improvement in us, so I think the focus for us has been on our preparation throughout the week to make sure that we get better.

"We understand that we're probably not the finished product, but there's been a lot of growth in the team as well with our performance.

"I know it's boring, but it's a very process-driven team. Week in, week out. Whether we win or lose, we're going back to our preparation."

After missing the past two Wallabies Tests, Slipper's return to the matchday squad comes with its own major milestone.

When Slipper runs out onto Allianz Stadium, he'll earn his 149th cap and leapfrog All Blacks great Richie McCaw (148) into third on the all-time international Test appearances list.

The evergreen prop was quick to swat away suggestions of 150 - "we don't want to count too early" - and downplay his role but made note of the growing positivity around Australian rugby.

"Every time I suit up and get the opportunity to wear the jersey, I get the nerves, a little bit of anxiety, but it's always a proud moment for me. There was none other more proud than that first one, and I remember it like it was yesterday," Slipper told reporters.

"We always feel the Wallabies support us but the last 18 months, in particular this year, it's just been immense. It's been so good to see the Wallabies jerseys walking around the streets during the game days and even during the week.

"It's not lost on us as players that we've got to make sure we keep that momentum and keep preparing well and giving those fans something to cheer about because without them, we're nothing.

"Every player has a sense of pride when they pull their jersey on because we're not just playing for us as players. We're playing for the fans as well and family."

Slipper also highlighted the "special" bond shared between himself, Nic White and James O'Connor - all of whom will start in Saturday's clash.

The trio were spotted dining together via O'Connor's social media and Slipper reflected on their connection.

"It's really special, really, because we kind of all came through, the three of us at the same time - 'Rabs' probably a little bit earlier than us -but we've played the majority of our careers together," he said.

"There's no secret about it, we're at the pointy end but just seeing Rabs come in this year and kind of fill the void for us throughout the year, it's just been special.

"We're obviously going pretty well at the moment. It's about just enjoying the preparation that we're doing, and the times on the training field, and making sure that we perform on the weekend."
