Wallaroos and Waratahs captain Piper Duck is cherishing her return to Rugby after a frustrating 2023 campaign.

Duck was named the youngest Wallaroos captain in history last season, however never took the field in gold after a series of setbacks.

However, the backrower suffered a Lisfranc injury in her left foot during their semi-final defeat to the Fijian Drua.

She aimed to return for the Pacific Four series before a routine lineout drill saw the 22-year-old heading for ankle reconstruction.

“It was really difficult. It was heartbreaking getting that injury and knowing straight away once I had surgery that I would be missing the international season," she told Rugby.com.au

“I learnt a lot about myself, what I value and it’s something I wouldn’t want to happen again but I’m grateful for the time I have had to reflect.

“I’m extremely proud of the girls and what they managed in the WXV, it was truly inspirational. The fact I can say I’m even somewhat a part of the group is truly amazing.”

Duck made her return during the pre-season trials against the ACT Brumbies, relishing the moment.

“It was surreal. I don’t think I fully comprehend it until after the game and I actually sat down," she said.

“It the moment, I’ve been working towards this goal, pushing myself and then getting the honour to run out there leading my girls is just so incredibly special. I was just so focused on the job at hand and what I need to do but it was surreal when that whistle went off and probably the most nervous I’ve been leading into that game.

“It was great to get stuck in with the first carry, had a really big hit and that got me into the game.”

The pink-headgear-wearing Duck will be eyeing off a Super Rugby Women's title before entertaining any thoughts of a Wallaroos return, embracing the pressure of having 14 Wallaroos in their squad to face the Brumbies.

“It’s more a privilege that we have such a talented group of girls," she added.

“Pressure is a privilege and I’m extremely excited with the group coming through with the rest of the girls and the depth in our squad, it’s grown in the last few years and now coming really to fruition.

“It’s really exciting and already what the girls have been able to do in these trial games leading up to the season has been incredible.

“It’s a really good culture at the moment and I think that’s going to show on the field.”
