The Waratahs looked to bounce back against the Chiefs

With so many players and clubs doing media each day, it can be hard to keep on top of a lot of the stories coming out.

Rugby is filled with them across all levels of the game and whilst most are covered through some form of media, there are others that might have slipped off the radar as Joseph Suaalii and Super Rugby Pacific dominates discussions.

Holloway reflects on Storm stint

With the talk of Joseph Suaalii signing with the Waratahs and RA all over the back pages, it gave a chance for Wallabies forward Jed Holloway to reflect on his own brief tryout with NRL giants Melbourne Storm.

Holloway went down to AAMI Park on a train-and-trial deal with the Storm at the peak of their dominance, only to quickly find himself back in rugby union and the Waratahs.

"One of my good family friends is (Storm legend) Robbie Kearns and actually he brought me down when I was 18," Holloway explained.

"It was right after Schoolies so I was about 10kgs overweight (laughs). I had a crack but I didn't get asked to come back.

"Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk and Cam Smith were all in (the squad), it was when they were right at their peak. It was awesome to go down there and be a part of it but I had a big beer gut and I wasn't in shape so they hurried me on real quick."

Stats to stun

In the modern game, there has never been a time when stats have been richer and more available to clubs, coaches and fans.

As data continued to develop, take a look at some of the more interesting and unique stats heading into the sixth round of Super Rugby Pacific, courtesy of Opta.

  • The Reds have only conceded over 30+ points once in their last nine games at Suncorp Stadium, winning six from nine
  • Meanwhile, the Crusaders have won 30 of their 32 games against Australian opposition, last losing to a non-NSW team in 2015 (Rebels)
  • Speaking of the Rebels, they are looking to buck a poor stint of form on the road, losing 11 of their last 12.
  • The Fijian Drua will be out for back-to-back home wins for the first time in club history
  • The Brumbies' winning streak over the Waratahs has been mentioned a lot in the build-up. The 11-game run is double the next highest streak between the two sides, with the Waratahs last winning in 2018.
  • Max Jorgensen averages a line break every three carries, the highest percentage of any player who has recorded over ten carries
  • The Force snapped a ten game losing streak against the Hurricanes last year, eager for back-to-back wins against the Wellington side for the first time in club history
Brumbies get Pollard boost

Wallabies hooker Billy Pollard is tracking to make his return for the Brumbies in a further boost for the club.

Pollard has not featured in 2023 after breaking his hand, set to make his return in the coming weeks

“Billy’s on the comeback trail, he’s been on the sidelines for a while and comes back to full training this week,” said Byron Field, Brumbies Head of Performance and Health

“We’re looking to get some game time into him over the next couple of weeks.”

It comes with Len Ikitau returning this week from a calf injury whilst fellow centre Hudson Creighton will be available in the coming weeks.

Aussies star at Hong Kong Tens

The next wave of Sevens talent has made their impression at the home of the World Series in Hong Kong as part of the Samurai Warriors.

There were over a dozen included in the side alongside English legend Rocky Clark as they took out the inaugural Hong Kong Tens Women's event.

This includes a host of Next Gen Stars, headlined by the likes of Sophie Duff, Ruby Nicholas, Brooke Gilroy and Reds captain Sidney Taylor.

They cruised past Ashbury Tropics 22-5 before holding off Tokyo Sankyu Phoenix 14-12 to the delight of the Aussie Sevens contingency in the crowd.

Social post of the week

If you notice some interesting cuts in the Highlanders squad for Friday's clash with Moana Pasifika, it's all for a good reason.

The club has gotten around lock Josh Dickson after his younger brother Sam was diagnosed with cancer.

"As a team, we're feeling for Josh at this time, and we just want to express our support for him and his brother in this tough time,” prop Ethan de Groot said.

“I just think shaving our heads is just a way to show them that we are supporting them and thinking of them, for Sam and his family.”
