Junior Wallabies flyhalf Tom Lynagh has been a late withdrawal ahead of the U20 World Championships.

Lynagh joined the squad at the start of the week and was expected to play in Wednesday's trial against the Australian Barbarians after featuring in the Reds' quarter-finals defeat on Saturday

After the 20-year-old missed the clash, Junior Wallabies coach Nathan Grey told Rugby.com.au that it was just precautionary amid the five-day turnaround.

"He pulled up after that game a bit sore and we had him during the week. We're just seeing how he goes and getting him right," Grey said on Wednesday.

"He played big minutes in that quarter-final so it's a good break for him but nothing to worry about."

However, precautionary scans have revealed a calf injury that will rule Lynagh out for the three-week tournament.

His place in the team will be taken by NSW Waratahs back Tom Morrison as they prepare to leave for South Africa on Sunday.

"We're all shattered for Tom (Lynagh) and disappointed he won't be part of the team in Cape Town," Grey said in a statement.

"However in sport these things happen to challenge us and to test our resolve.

"I know he'll charge into his rehab and ensure he's available to play as soon as possible.

"At the same time it's great to have Tom Morrison join the squad and he'll no doubt make an important contribution to our campaign in South Africa."

Lynagh was named Reds' Rookie of the Year on Tuesday, playing 12 games in 2023.
