Former Queensland Reds and Wallabies coach John Connolly has today been honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2026 Australia Day Honours List.

Connolly has been recognised for his service in the community through rugby union.

Connolly’s impressive resume includes 12 years as Reds coach (1989-2000) during which time he guided Queensland rugby to a Super Six title, two Super 10 trophies and the No.1 seeding into the Super 12 finals in 1996 and 1999.

The proud Queenslander also coached the Wallabies to the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France during his time in charge of the national team (2006 and 2007).

His achievements abroad included a premiership when guiding Stade Francais to the French title in the 1999-2000 season.

Connolly was voted into the Queensland Rugby Union Hall of Fame in 2025.

Queensland Rugby Union Chief Executive David Hanham said: “The QRU is delighted this AM recognises John’s lifetime of contribution to the game as a coach and mentor to generations of players.

“More recently, John’s service to his community as a councillor for Sunshine Coast Regional Council has continued his dedication to helping others.

“Since a life-changing injury from a fall (in 2021) confined John to a wheelchair, he has also been active in raising awareness for the disabled.”
