Meanwhile, Argentinan young gun Mateo Carreras established himself as a hero with a hat-trick in their must-win game against Japan.

These players have dominated discussions over the past week but there are several remarkable performances to highlight.

Using stats from Opta, Rugby.com.au looks at five Hidden Gems from the past weekend of Rugby

Josh van der Flier (Ireland)

It feels weird referring to the reigning Player of the Year as a 'hidden gem' but the flanker's work in their win over Scotland arguably hasn't received the praise it deserved.

Van der Flier finished the game with an incredible 22 tackles from his 24 attempts, two of which were dominant tackles.

He also comfortably topped the table for ruck arrivals (33), ten more than the next best, as well as stealing a lineout.

Van der Flier completed a brilliant night for the back row, with centurion Peter O'Mahoney and number eight Caelan Doris brilliant in the win.

Liam Williams (Wales)

Williams sparked the Welsh to an electric attacking performance.

Wales' attack lost Gareth Anscombe minutes before the game, however, the fullback stepped up as a weapon in attack with three line breaks, a try and a try assist.

He also ran for a game-high 150m gained, complemented by just under 350 kicking metres on ten attempts.

Julian Montoya (Argentina)

The Pumas captain was inspirational in their must-win game against Japan.

Montoya nearly went the full 80 minutes, only pulled off with the game wrapped up in a true starring performance.

He led the team for carries (12) and tackles (14) as well as claiming a crucial breakdown steal on his line.

The hooker was also perfect at lineout and scrum in one of the better all-around games you will see from a front-rower.

Solomone Kata (Tonga)

Kata was a wrecking ball for Tonga in their hard-fought win over Romania.

The winger thrived with ball in hand, recording four line breaks and eight tackle busts to go with a double.

Kata also set up a line break as Tonga ran away with the contest in the second half.

David Wallis de Carvalho (Portugal)

Wallis is one of several stars that emerged from a Portugal side that will go down in history.

The backrower is the back-bone of their defensive structure and stepped up when needed with a perfect 21 from 21 tackles.

He also broke a pair of tackles along with nailing a 51m kick, defying his 100kg frame.

Wallis was joined by yet another world-class game from Nicolas Martins, who is a star of the future and should be quickly snapped up by a top side
