Former Wallabies coach John Connolly is in the spinal unit of Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital after a fall.

Connolly said he faced at least 12 months rehabilitation after sustaining the serious injury while on a visit to his father’s home last Sunday.

He said it was too early to gauge how extensive the injuries are.

“I look like facing at least 12 months rehab,” Connolly said.

“I just wanted to say ‘thank you’ to all the people who have expressed concern.”

The shock within rugby circles was immediate because few coaches in Australia have touched so many since his celebrated stint with the Queensland team (1989-2000) began more than three decades ago.

"Knuckles" Connolly, 70, led the Wallabies to the 2007 World Cup during his 25 Tests in charge of the Australian team.

Wallabies great Tim Horan led the outpouring of support and well-wishing for his long-time friend and state coach.

“Thoughts and prayers to my good mate and former Wallaby coach John Connolly. Had a fall 2 days ago and in hospital (ICU). One of the best brains in the game. This will be a tough fight “Knuckles”...we’re all with you,” Horan tweeted.

Connolly had again been a regular face at Brisbane club games this season during a return to his beloved Brothers club as Premier Grade advisor for new head coach Brendan Gabbett and others through the club.
