The Western Force has made it two wins from two Swyftx Super Rugby Women’s pre-season trial games with an impressive 40-15 victory away to the ACT Brumbies on Saturday.
The Force spent the week in Canberra for Saturday’s clash after a one-sided victory over NSW club Manly Marlins in Sydney last Sunday.
The hit-out against a fellow Super W side, a fortnight out from Round 1 of the season proper, provided a sterner test but the Force – who made six changes to the starting 15 – started strong and never let up.
The Force raced to a two-try lead early, holding a 21-10 advantage at half-time, before adding three second-half tries, led by a Sera Naiqama double.
The result provides a strong platform for the Force ahead of the new campaign, where the side has the Round 1 bye before travelling to face the Fijian Drua away on Saturday 13 June.
Nami Dickson dotted inside the first 10 minutes, before full-back Aiysha Wigley – in her second game back from long-term injury – added a second.
Wallaroos half-back Samantha Wood converted both for a 14-0 lead inside quarter of an hour.
The Brumbies responded to make it 14-5, before ex-ACT winger Halley Derera extended the Force’s lead with a converted try after 25 minutes. ACT scored again to make it 21-10 at the interval.
Second-rower Naiqama quickly blunted any Brumbies’ hopes of a second-half rally with a try early after half-time.
Kalamunda hooker Hera-Barb Malcolm Heke added another five-pointer, converted by Wood to make it 33-10.
Naiqama grabbed her second with Wood’s conversion extending the lead to 40-10 before a Brumbies consolation.
