Five things we learned from Wallabies - Fiji

Harry Wilson's Wallabies produced one of their greatest ever Test escapes in Newcastle, defeating Fiji 21-18 in a last-gasp thriller.

The Flying Fijians dominated much of the contest and led 18-14 until the 78th minute before Wilson barged over for the match-winner to send a packed-out McDonald Jones Stadium absolutely berserk.

Here's what we learned:

1. Captain Harry saves the day

With his side trailing by four points in the dying minutes, Wallabies skipper Harry Wilson stepped up and delivered.

The big number eight spun out of a two-man Fijian tackle, wrestled past Sireli Maqala and kissed the gold-trimmed Gilbert on a blade of grass to put his side ahead.

It capped a mammoth 80-minute performance from Wilson and all but secured his starting berth - and captaincy - for the upcoming British & Irish Lions Series.

His composure in the face of what loomed a devastating result was also impressive, particularly late in the game as he backed the Australian lineout and pick-and-drive.

Len Ikitau was among the Wallabies' best in his ding-dong midfield battle with Fijian star Josua Tuisova while wing duo Harry Potter and Max Jorgensen had strong moments against their electric rivals.

2. Another Lolesio headknock

The Wallabies' flyhalf debate was blown wide open in the 60th minute after Noah Lolesio went down with another concussion concern.

Joe Schmidt's chief playmaker is now in serious doubt for the opening Lions Test on July 19 after sustaining his third serious head knock and being stretchered from the field.

It follows earlier incidents against the Fijian Drua (February) and the Western Force (May) during the Super Rugby Pacific season.

Pending Lolesio's recovery, Ben Donaldson and Tom Lynagh could find themselves in the driver's seat to wear the Wallaby number 10 in Brisbane.

3. Fantastic Fijians' second-half surge

They didn't fire a shot until the 40th minute - but when they did, the Flying Fijians were simply irresistible and deserved to win in Newcastle.

A breakout play in the shadows of halftime from an ill-advised Wallabies kick saw the visitors storm back 70m and cross via standout fullback Salesi Rayasi.

From there, it was one-way traffic as the Fijians dominated the collision zone and scoresheet to pile pressure on their hosts.

Two Caleb Muntz penalties either side of a miraculous Lekima Tagitagivalu counterattacking try saw the Fijians flip a 14-0 deficit into a 18-14 lead with just two minutes to play.

Winger Jiuta Wainiqolo was a standout all afternoon with six tackle busts, four offloads and a linebreak.

4. Forward pass faux pas

It wasn't as though the Wallabies didn't have their chances in Newcastle.

Indeed, Australia had multiple scoring opportunities cruelled by forward passes and other faux pas.

Harry Potter and Max Jorgensen both had tries called back while the Wallabies backs were often guilty of needlessly kicking away possession - most notably before half time.

Australia's attack also lacked direction with forward pods struggling to combat the Fijians linespeed.

That the Wallabies somehow managed to find victory is a testament to sheer will and determination but they'll need to improve massively over the next fortnight before they face the Lions at Suncorp Stadium.

5. Good News in the 'Castle

A massive crowd of 28,132 packed into McDonald Jones Stadium and showcased the value of taking Test rugby to non-metropolitan centres.

The Hunter has strong rugby ties and they were out in full force on Sunday afternoon for a brilliant international fixture.

The Wallabies' game week engagement with local Hunter clubs was well received and paves way for even further regional engagement in 2025.

Joe Schmidt's men will also head to Townsville this year during The Rugby Championship and there's bigger things to come in 2027 with both cities confirmed as Rugby World Cup hosts.

Later this year, Newcastle will also host the 2025 Australian Rugby Shield - click here for all the details.
