'Can't rest on laurels': Brumbies firmly in finals mode despite heading into bye week

They might be currently sitting atop the ladder and going into a critical bye weekend, but Brumbies assistant coach Rod Seib has made it clear the side is already thinking about the Crusaders coming to town next week - and the finals beyond that.

A strong win over the Reds sees the Brumbies head into the penultimate round with a guaranteed home qualifying final, not being able to fall any lower than third on the ladder.

But should the Chiefs and Crusaders also maintain their winning form, the Brumbies will come into the final round knowing a potential home semi-final is on the line.

"This time of the year, we certainly need it [the bye,]" Seib admitted to reporters.

"Just to have those few days, just to get away from the game. It's been so important.

"To be sitting where we are, we're quite confident going into the finals. In saying that, the recent performances we've had, whilst we've had some wins, we still know there's room for growth.

"We're happy with where we are, we know we can't rest on our laurels.

"As an attacking unit, we're quite lethal, but we're just not finishing those opportunities. We had the Reds in a position where we could have converted, but we didn't, so we need to sharpen up.

"When you're in the finals, you only get a couple of opportunities. If you don't ice them, then you're reflecting on the year and being very disappointed, so we need to sharpen up with what we're doing in attack to make sure we're converting those opportunities."

The unpredictability of Super Rugby Pacific in 2025 has not been lost on the Brumbies assistant coach, revealing that it has been one of the biggest challenges coming into the end of the year.

"It's great, isn't it? Normally, you can predict when you go into a quarterfinals and you have first playing eighth previously," Seib smiled.

"Whereas this year, you know, there's going to be an upset. You can see the form that Moana is playing with at the moment and the way that they're going into the finals.

"They're a team you certainly wouldn't want to be playing in a quarter, so it'll be interesting to see where it all lands."

While finals are in the back of the Brumbies' heads, next week's match with the Crusaders looms as one of the most critical of the entire season, with Seib revealing the Brumbies have a firm eye on their Kiwi counterparts.

The season may hold even more significance for Seib himself, with the coach set to depart the Brumbies at the end of the season, heading for Irish side Connacht.

"We'll be watching closely, doing a lot of review [for the Crusaders]," Seib admitted.

"We just make sure that we're owning our detail and really executing when we need to.

"I wouldn't say there's extra motivation, but it's been a special five years, and to finish with a premiership would certainly be a fantastic way to end the time at the Brumbies.

"I've grown enormously from coming in here, working with Dan McKellar and Laurie Fisher initially, and Dan Palmer in that environment. It's been a great environment for a young coach to learn.

"To work with essentially the same group of players for five years - they're such a good group of men away from the sport - it's certainly something I'll miss when I do leave."
