The Brumbies have announced back-rower Rebecca Smyth will captain the side in the 2022 Super W season.

Smyth has become a mainstay for the club since joining in 2020, awarded the Helen Taylor award in 2021 as Players’ Player of the Year.

The legendary Wallaroo will become the fourth captain in history, taking over from Michaela Leonard.

“I’m honoured to be leading this group this season," she said in a statement.

“I’ve loved every minute of playing for the Brumbies and I believe this group can achieve special things if we do the work required.

“Being captain means I’ll run out first and speak to the referee, but we have a really strong leadership group as well and we’re all committed to driving the standards we have set for ourselves as a team.”

Brumbies coach Dan Hawke believes Smyth's leadership and experience made her a perfect choice for the role as they push for their first Final appearance.

“(Smyth) is a joy to work with, someone who lives and breathes the values we expect from a Brumby," he added.

“She’s done everything in the game, has life experience and a presence that people just feed off.

“Through adversity last year, Dunny emerged as a strong voice within the team and with a new group this year, we felt she was the perfect person to take on the captaincy for what we hope will be a special season.”
