Scrumhalf Tate McDermott knows whichever flyhalf is picked by coach Joe Schmidt will thrive for the Wallabies as the Queenslander embraces a Suncorp opener.

The flyhalf battle is wide open after Noah Lolesio was ruled out for the Lions series due to a neck injury.

Ben Donaldson, Tom Lynagh and James O'Connor are among the options, with McDermott very familiar with Lynagh and O'Connor.

Lynagh and McDermott have formed a very reliable combination for the Reds, leaving the Reds skipper confident the young half could step into a debut Test start with ease despite missing the Fiji Test due to injury.

“He was fully training during that Fiji week. For us, we just had to make sure he was 100 per cent, which he wasn't for that game," he told reporters. “I've played a lot of footy with Tommy as well, particularly recently, and his development over the last 12 months has been fantastic.

“The way he steered around the Reds side this year is a true credit to all the work he's done and all the work that he's had put into him as well. His experiences last year on the Wallabies side, Les’s [Kiss] guidance, James in the background there as well.

“…I'd back whoever is in that 9 or 10 jersey to take the lines on. Like I said before, it's going to be a huge challenge."

Meanwhile, O'Connor and McDermott spent several years together in the halves, with the scrumhalf noticing more than just the halves picking O'Connor's brain given his unique experience as the last flyhalf to start for the Wallabies in a Lions game.

“Really happy for someone like James O’Connor. I've played a lot of footy with him. To come back in, it's a long time since he's played the Lions so, to have him there in Donno’s [Ben Donaldson] and Tom Lynagh’s year has been huge,” he explained.

“The thing about James, he's been in multiple environments. But he was in our Queensland environment for a long time.

“The boys got better just around him, having him in there, just asking him questions around his experiences in rugby on and off the field. The whole squad improved because of his presence. He's obviously gone away into a new environment, which is an incredibly successful environment in the Crusaders.

“He's come back just a guy that's absolutely loving his footy. He's spending time with not only Tommy and Donno, but the centres, the wingers.

"What we know about James is that he's played pretty much every position in the backline, apart from nine if I'm mistaken, he has a wealth of experience, and those boys have just been going to the pond every day to try and get little gold nuggets out of him."

A bumper crowd is expected at Suncorp Stadium for the clash, with Lions and Wallabies jerseys starting to fill Brisbane.

This delighted the Reds skipper, who was eager to see a wave of gold jerseys in the crowd on Saturday.

"What we know about Suncorp, it's a fantastic place, if not the best place for Australia to play," McDermott believes.

“We love playing at Suncorp, particularly me being pretty biased from Queensland, it's the best place in the world.

“The boys are really keen to rip in and it should be a fantastic crowd.

"Wear your gold jerseys."
