Having flexed their muscle against Jamaica, the Australian men's sevens side has salvaged a draw against Uganda to avoid one of the biggest upsets in the sport's Commonwealth Games history.

Reduced to five men with both Maurice Longbottom and Dietrich Roache binned late in the second half, the Aussies held on for a share of the points by the barest of margins.

Uganda's Philip Wokorach opted to take a shot at goal when his side was awarded a penalty after the fulltime siren, but his drop kick from 40 metres out just sailed wide.

The draw means Australia will need to defeat unbeaten pool leaders Kenya in their final preliminary game on Saturday to book a finals berth - a situation they didn't see coming when they ran in 10 tries to thump Jamaica 62-0 in their opening game.

The Australian women's team had no such issues, putting up a combined 88 unanswered points in disposing of South Africa and Scotland.

It's enough to have them safely ensconced in the semi-finals with a pool game against the also unbeaten Fiji to come on Saturday.

It was all looking so good for the men's side when Wallabies star Samu Kerevi scored a first half hat-trick in their dominant win over Jamaica.

His first try came 11 seconds into the contest when he tip-toed down the sideline, and after setting up two more tries for Nathan Lawson and Corey Toole, he did it all himself to complete his hat-trick before the break.

It's no wonder coach John Manenti was so keen to rush Kerevi back into the sevens fold following his impressive series against England in the 15-man game.

Australia were expected to make similar light work of Uganda, but a runaway try after the halftime siren saw them go into the break down 7-5.

Henry Hutchison put the Aussies back on top when he crossed after a Ugandan fumble, but it was all locked up when Wokorach took advantage of the two-man overlap.

It was a big day for Maddison Levi for the women's side as she and Charlotte Caslick both scored doubles in the 38-0 win over South Africa.

Levi then bettered that effort with a hat-trick in the 50-0 drubbing of Scotland in the evening match.
