ACT Brumbies Super Rugby Women Sign Japanese International Prop Wako Kitano

The ACT Brumbies are excited to announce the signing of Japanese international tighthead prop Wako Kitano, joining the club ahead of the 2026 Swyftx Super Rugby Women’s season.

The 26‑year‑old arrives with valuable international experience, debuting for Japan and earning 25 caps. Known for her powerful ball‑carrying and dominant physicality, Kitano scored four tries at the 2025 Women’s World Cup. The prop shapes as a genuine strike weapon close to the try line, and her arrival bolsters the Brumbies’ front row stocks.

Kitano began her rugby journey at Kobe Kohoku High School before developing further at Ryutsu Keizai University, where she played until 2022. In 2022, she joined the Mie Pearls, and after a stint with Leicester Tigers in the UK, she arrives in Canberra eager to prove herself in the Super W.

Kitano said she is excited by the opportunity to represent the club in Super W.

“I’m thrilled to join the Brumbies and can’t wait to play in front of the local fans during the Super W season,” Kitano said.

“It’s an amazing opportunity, and I’m excited to work with the coaches and push myself to play my best rugby.”

The Japanese international said she is determined to make an impact both on and off the field.

“I’m looking forward to bringing my skills and experience to the team each week”

“I believe in this team and I’m looking forward to contributing to a successful season.”

ACT Brumbies Super Rugby Women’s Head Coach James Erwin said Kitano’s signing will provide a major boost ahead of the 2026 season.

“Wako Kitano is a special signing for the club and will be a tremendous asset throughout the season,” Erwin said.

“Adding another international-calibre player will obviously strengthen our squad, and she brings a character and energy to our environment that we know will have a big impact on performances.”

“She possesses a ball-carrying ability and strength at scrum time that we are excited about, and I am looking forward to seeing her perform across our SRW campaign.”
