The ACT Brumbies-Queensland Reds match has been delayed by over an hour due to severe weather in Canberra.

The match was scheduled for a 7:35 pm (AEDT) kick-off, but multiple lightning strikes were recorded within 10km of GIO Stadium.

After multiple setbacks, the game would get underway 90 minutes after the originally slated time at 9:00 pm.

The lightning included one striking the top of the stadium as the two teams prepared to go out onto the field.

Under tournament regulations, there must be 30 minutes without lightning before the game can kick off.

There were hopes of the game kicking off at 8:30 pm, before further strikes saw this period restart.

It brought back memories of last year's British & Irish Lions series, with the third Test delayed at half-time due to lightning.

If the game was cancelled, both teams would receive 2 points each.

It would leave the Brumbies undefeated and on the top of the ladder after their three straight wins to start the year.

Meanwhile, the Reds have found themselves haunted by the wet conditions, playing multiple home games in the deluge last year.

The delay added to the chaos for the Brumbies, who lost Corey Toole and Ollie Sapsford to injuries 24 hours before the game.
