The Waratahs are set to sit down with referee Angus Gardner as they prepare to adapt to a host of new laws in the upcoming Super Rugby AU.

Australian teams had a glimpse of some law variations and a crackdown on breakdown laws from the opening round of the Super Rugby Aotearoa but there are further changes coming for the Aussie competition.

Backrower Lachie Swinton expects there to be some adjustment for all teams in the breakdown and the Waratahs are set for a visit from Australian referee Angus Gardner in the coming days to go over any questions they might have.

"I watched the (New Zealand) game, it was real good, the introduction of new laws, great opportunity for on ballers," he said.

"We've started to implement that into our trainings and to get familiarised with the new laws.

"I think Angus Gardner will come in in a few days and present us a presentation to nut out any questions that the boys may have, just to get real clarity so we're all guns blazing against the Reds."

Swinton said he expected those laws especially would speed up the game more, limiting the ability for attacking players to try and soak up time with extra movements

"Our ball carrier, instead of being able to take a couple of half metres or so, doesn't have the opportunity to do that anymore, has to do a quick one place in one motion," he said.

"Then on the opposite side gives a great on-ball opportunity. The two supporting players and the attack have to be real switched on sealing over that ball and eliminating any threats that may be around our breakdown."

Brumbies assistant Laurie Fisher said it would take some weeks before the full impact of the new laws was realised.

"They were pretty harsh on the poacher...it will take a couple of weeks to get clarity," he said.

"Honestly, I don't think it will change things dramatically. It's just about reinterpreting what's in the law book...around the breakdown, you want to make sure you give the attacking team a go.

"I don't want to go too far to the side of the defence being rewarded too quickly and not having earned that.

"The changes in rugby league were about speeding the game up and advantaging the attacking team. We don't want to go away from that...we've just got to see how it operates and fine tune as we go."

The Waratahs will be the first cabs off the rank in Super Ruby AU, taking on the Reds on Friday July 3 and Swinton said having a date to work towards was a huge boost.

"It is different, you could tell just around the group as soon as the date had been announced, we start beginning to focus and you can visually see yourself playing in the near future," he said.

"It makes a huge difference. You can see that throughout the group and in and around training.

"The intensity has definitely been picked up and I'm sure definitely in today's session as well. I'm sure that will keep going up to kick-off in about two weeks."

Waratahs veteran Michael Hooper and RUPA president Damien Fitzpatrick have both been influential off the field in some turbulent months for Australian rugby and Swinton said they had a major influence on the team's approach.

"They're both RUPA representatives and they've both done a great job in keeping us all in the loop and really pushing for not only us Waratahs but the whole of Australian rugby, they were pushing our players' voice," he said.

"Massive credit to both them in looking after the players and they've been real clear and vocal to our group and I'm sure all the rugby players in Australia.

"I'm sure they've been huge in keeping everyone to a positive mindset and keeping everyone hungry and keen and eyes on the prize, they've been great."

The Waratahs take on the Reds on Friday July 3 at Suncorp Stadium, kicking off at 7:05pm AEST, LIVE on Foxtel, Foxtel Now and Kayo Sports.
