The Wallabies have held out a gritty Pumas side in a 16-10 win at Suncorp Stadium.

A return to the Test arena was “unreal” for James O’Connor and Wallabies coach Michael Cheika says his Brisbane cameo shapes as just the first step in the next chapter of his Wallabies career.

O’Connor played 12 minutes off the bench for the Wallabies in his first Test since 2013, capping off a remarkable three weeks for the utility.

The 29-year-old played 44 Tests by the time he was 23 before his contract was terminated in 2013 after a series of indiscretions.

O’Connor has spent the past two seasons in Sale but late last year, made it known that his ultimate desire was to return to the Wallabies.

On Saturday night, that goal was finally realised, three weeks after he was brought into the wider training squad in Brisbane.

Though he only had a minor cameo in the match, replacing Tevita Kuridrani in the centres in the 68th minute, it was enough to tick off Test no. 45.

Speaking to FOX SPORTS after the match,  O’Connor said returning to the international stage was “unreal”.

“It was pretty unreal,” he said.

“I've put it out there, how much I've actually missed being there.

“It's such an opportunity to play for your country. There’s definitely something building here nicely.

“We don't want to get too ahead of ourselves, but it's great to be back and involved.”

“I'm not a boy anymore.

“I spent six years in the wilderness and found myself and developed and learnt a lot about rugby and a lot off the field.”

Wallabies fullback Kurtley Beale said O’Connor had clearly changed in recent years and said he relished playing alongside his long-time friend again.

“He's a mature lad and rubs off on a lot of the lads...when he's on he's on and has such a special rugby brain,” he said.

“It's great to have him back in the group and created really great competition with each other.”

While he didn’t have much time to make an impact, Wallabies coach Michael Cheika said this wouldn’t be the last outing O’Connor would have in a Test jersey.

“He didn't get to do much but I think I just wanted him to get out there and get the nerves out because I can see him playing a big part further down the track,” he said.

As for where his part might be, Cheika said he was leaning towards O’Connor filling a role in the centres.

“I don't know, maybe in the centre, maybe in the back three, so that's pretty much just avoiding the question at this point,” he laughed.

“He's versatile, he can play all those positions so he's picked as a back three reserve today but he ended up playing in the centre so gave a bit of a look there.

“That's probably where - midfield...he’s a good, highly-skilled player but he can play anywhere.”

The Wallabies have a week off next week before heading to Perth to take on the All Blacks.

Australia hosts New Zealand at Optus Stadium in Perth on Saturday August 10, kicking off at 5:45pm local, 7:45pm AEST, LIVE on Network Ten, FOX SPORTS, Kayo and via RUGBY.com.au RADIO.
