Fiji have claimed a record breaking fifth straight Hong Kong crown, with a 21-7 victory over France.

Australia's men have finished 11th in Hong Kong after losing their Challenge Trophy semi-final to Scotland while Fiji has claimed a record fifth straight Cup.

The Aussies started the final day on a positive note after two pool defeats relegated them out of the Cup competition, with a win over Portugal.

Australia found themselves three tries down before Maurice Longbottom hit back against the Portuguese.

Simon Kennewell notched a try less than a minute later and his second, paired with a Joe Pincus score, assured them of a Challenge Trophy semi spot.

That optimism from that opening match was snuffed out in a 19-17 semi-final loss against Scotland.

The Scots burst out of the blocks with two tries in the opening four minutes before Longbottom again notched the Aussies' opener.

Scotland had a quick reply and though Jeral Skelton and Brandon Quinn were able to add to the score but they ultimately ran out of time to run their opponents down.

Australian coach Tim Walsh said he felt like the side made some progress despite the disappointing finish.

"It doesn’t feel like it right now and results don’t reflect it, but we made some head way from a longer-term perspective this weekend," he said.

“I don’t have excuses and I am accountable for this team’s performance. We prepare to perform, and we always will. Sevens is a brutal game and requires physical and mental resilience.

“It also requires a group of players with skill, experience and dedication to the cause.”

Fiji beat out France in the Cup final 21-7, securing their fifth consecutive Hong Kong title - a record for any team in any leg of the World Series.

This result leaves Australia's chances of automatic Olympic qualification all but dashed with three legs left on the World Series.

Australia will almost definitely be forced to play in the Oceania Olympic qualifier in Suva from November 7-9.

That competition won't be a breeze for the Aussies, with Pacific nations like Samoa proving themselves dangerous after another Cup semi-final berth in Hong Kong.

Ireland earned a central spot on the men's circuit for 2019-20 with a win in the World Series qualifying competition.

Brazil will enter the women's series next season after topping the women's qualifiers.

The men's circuit travels to Singapore next weekend.
