Australia’s Olympic campaign has finished with a 12-10 defeat to France, handing them in eighth place.

They couldn’t get revenge on France, who comprehensively beat Australia in their Pool B opener two days ago.

A smart intercept from Tom Cusack gave Australia the first attack of the game in front of a loud Deodoro crowd.

It was all Australia in the early stages with Ed Jenkins forcing his way over the line but it was disallowed after a double movement as he went to place the ball.

Australia’s rush-up defence causing havoc and Cusack came close moments later, but the tall timber lost the ball as he attempted to ground it.

Australia were made to rue their missed opportunities moments later, as Terry Bouhraoua went 80 metres to score.

Julien Candelon and France surging out in the second stanza with his quick feet breaking the line and superb fend allowed him to score.

Australia answered back with a great break from Con Foley but as the overlap screamed out wide, a crunching hit on Ed Jenkins coughed up the ball to stop the counter attack.

Jenkins dusting himself as Australia turned over the ball and showed a clean set of heels to narrow the margin to two points.

Stannard couldn’t convert though, leaving France to close out the game and clinch seventh spot.
