Taniela 'The Tongan Thor' Tupou is amongst the new faces for the Queensland Reds ahead of their derby with the Brumbies in Canberra.

Stephen Larkham has named rookie Ben Hyne at number 8 for their clash with Queensland at GIO Stadium on Friday night.

It caps a rapid rise for Hyne who initially moved to Canberra at the start of the season without the guarantee of a contract.

The 22-year old - who featured in Brisbane City’s undefeated 2015 National Rugby Championship campaign - is now on a development contract and has been a standout in the John I Dent Cup for Tuggeranong Vikings.Ben Hyne has been a standout in the John I Dent Cup for Tuggeranong

In another change, Joe Powell will get his first Brumbies start after featuring in Michael Cheika’s Wallabies squad during the June International break.

Matt Toomua (knee) and Andrew Smith (foot) will make their return from injury while Joe Tomane continues his knee rehabilitation, leaving Nigel Ah Wong and James Dargaville on the wings.

The Brumbies have won four of their last six games against Queensland, including their last three encounters.
