Wallabies coach Michael Cheika says Rebels flanker Sean McMahon is leading all comers in the Australian Super Rugby conference so far.
McMahon will face off against incumbent Wallabies openside in Michael Hooper when the Rebels take on the Waratahs on Sunday.
The 21-year-old, who was also handed the Rebels captaincy with Nic Stirzaker working his way back from injury, replaced a suspended Hooper in the Wallabies World Cup side to face Wales.
Speaking on the rugby.com.au podcast, Cheika was quick to label McMahon the standout of the Australians in Super Rugby right now, after a scintillating opening month.
“It’s not hard to work out Sean McMahon has been the stand out so far what we’re seeing is confirming that,” he said.
“All our back rowers (have been good). Scott Fardy, no one really talks about him, he’s just doing his job.
“David Pocock is timing his run and Michael Hooper’s been outstanding for the Waratahs too.
“Put that in with Ben McCalman...who hasn't hit his straps just yet and I think Angus Cottrell over there and Liam Gill’s back too.“
“There’s a competitive environment going on in those six, seven, eight positions."
Cheika has just returned from a stint overseas, keeping an eye on the Six nations tournament and visiting overseas Wallabies ahead of the June Test series.
The Wallabies play their opening Test against England in Brisbane on June 11.
