Former Wallaby captain George Gregan, along with Senior Development Officer John Searl from the Australian Rugby Union, recently led a group of seven junior rugby coaches from Sydney on a charity-related coaching mission to Livingstone Zambia.
The tour, to support Tag Rugby Trust's "Building Futures Through Rugby" program, provided coaching and organised competitions for grade 5 and 6 school children whilst also assisting local “Young Leaders” develop the necessary coaching skills to continue the programs.
However, Rugby proved to be just the vehicle that allowed the group to provide much wider support for the schools and local communities in and around Livingstone.
The group spent a week coaching over 400 children which was the first time most of them had been involved in any level of organised sport. At the end of the week the coaches, in conjunction with leaders from each school, selected teams to compete in a full-day tag Rugby tournament. For the Australian coaches it was a unique opportunity for them to do what we they best and offer a pathway of learning, friendship, teamwork and achievement to the kids through Rugby.
