The Australian Rugby Union today congratulated the Sydney Convicts on winning the Bingham Cup Championship in 2014.
The Convicts defeated rival Australian Club the Brisbane Hustlers 31-0 to win the world cup of gay Rugby for an impressive fourth time.
Australian Rugby Union CEO Bill Pulver, who was present for the final, offered ARU’s congratulations.
“On behalf of everyone in the Australian Rugby family we offer our congratulations to the Sydney Convicts on retaining the Bingham Cup.”
“Against strong opposition from all over the world, the Sydney-based side overcame physical challenges and tough conditions throughout the three-day tournament to become worthy champions.
“The Convicts have also been champions of the cause of inclusion and anti-homophobia in Australian sport and have worked hard to raise awareness.
“In the lead up to the 2014 Bingham Cup, we announced a new Inclusion Policy for Australian Rugby, designed to stamp out all forms of discrimination and homophobia in our sport and ensure a positive environment for everyone involved.
“Rugby is a sport for everyone and the 2014 Bingham Cup was the embodiment of that fact.
“Congratulations to the 2014 Bingham Cup Committee, which has done a terrific job in creating real change, in addition to organising a fantastic tournament in Sydney,” Pulver said.
Another Australian victory came through the efforts of the Melbourne Chargers who won the Bingham Plate final 31 to 10, over the San Francisco Fog.
