The result from last night's Pool A match between Australia and New Zealand will stand, World Rugby has confirmed.

The governing body released a statement after it was revealed that the Kiwis fielded eight players in the latter stages of the game, during which time Ardie Savea clinched a post-full time try to draw with Australia.

The result meant New Zealand topped the pool and Australia set up a quarter-final clash with England.

World Rugby confirmed it was investigating the incident but the result of the match would stand.

"The alleged incident occurred during the second half of New Zealand's Pool A match against Australia on February 6," it read.

"In accordance with Law 3.2 the result of the match will stand, but World Rugby is currently reviewing the matter to determine if any disciplinary action is warranted.

"No further comment will be made until the outcome of the investigation."

Australia plays England in a Cup quarter-final at 12:19pm AEDT, while New Zealand plays USA at 11:35am.
