The Australian Rugby Union has welcomed the opening of the Albert Tibby Cotter Bridge. The walkway for pedestrians and cyclists will open up Sydney’s CBD to Moore Park with a clear and safe walkway to Allianz Stadium and the Sydney Cricket Ground.
A win for Rugby fans, with Australian Rugby a contributor to many matches at Allianz Stadium with the NSW Waratahs frequently playing home matches in the Asteron Life Super Rugby competition and the Qantas Wallabies hosting 24 Test matches since 1989.
With a rich history of Rugby in the Moore Park Region, Australia played their first Test match against a touring side from Great Britain. In a four Test series played in Sydney and Brisbane, Australia won the first Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 24th June 13-3.
The Wallabies most recent test was a Saturday afternoon thriller against France on June 21 where the Wallabies won 39-13.
The crowd of 43 188 was the biggest crowd for a Rugby fixture at Allianz Stadium.
Mr. Cotter played cricket for Australia during the years of 1904 and 1912. He was killed in action in while serving as a stretcher bearer in the 4th Light Horse Brigade of the Australian Imperial Force.
The 420 metre long walkway links existing paths on Anzac Parade and is expected to improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists travelling between Moore Park, Surry Hills and the Sydney CBD.
