The Qantas Australian Men's Sevens program today announced Paul Asquith and Alex Gibbon have been released from their contracts at their own request.
Asquith made his debut for Australia in Tokyo in March 2013, earning nine World Series caps and scoring 76 points in the process. The 21-year-old from Wollongong last appeared for his country at the London leg of the 2013/14 HSBC Sevens World Series in May 2014.
Lismore-born Gibbon made his debut for Australia on the Gold Coast in October 2013, earning the last of his seven caps at Twickenham in the London leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series in May 2015.
Qantas Australian Men's Sevens Head Coach Geraint John said: "Alex [Gibbon] and Paul [Asquith] have decided to go back to their clubs and play XVs Rugby which I have supported. Both were excellent individuals and people and I wish them the very best playing regularly for their club and hopefully NRC later in the year. It was good to see them playing for Southern Districts against Sydney University in the Shute Shield and have a chat with them post-game.
"Alex and Paul both thanked the staff for their support and hard work during their time in the program which was a nice touch and says a lot about their character. I sincerely hope Alex and Paul go on to achieve their ambitions in Rugby and I would like to place on record my thanks to both of them for their efforts."
Both players will be available to represent Southern Districts for the remainder of the 2015 Intrust Shute Shield season.
