While the Australian U20’s continue to prepare for the final match of the Oceania Rugby Junior Championship, over 50 Coaches from Queensland Rugby had the opportunity to learn from some of the best and most experienced Coaches in Australian Rugby.

Led by Australian U20’s Head Coach Adrian Thompson alongside his experienced assistants in Allan Gaffney, Cameron Blades and Shane Arnold, the Coaches gave those present some firsthand lessons in elite coaching, analysis and player development.

With each Coach focusing on a different area of the game, those present were given a complete overview of each facet of the U20’s program.

The ARU’s Pathway to gold Program, although heavily focused on producing the next generation of elite Australian players has a focus on creating the next generation of emerging and elite Coaches as the ARU’s Pathways Services Manager - Coaching, Jayson Brewer explains.

“We’ve had a coaching workshop where we have integrated over 50 coaches from QRU. A variety of coaches from director of Rugby positions, Premier Coaches and pathways Coaches.

“The workshop consisted of integrated on-field sessions mixed with technical and tactical presentations from coaches involved in the Australian U20’s program.

“Our U20’s Head Coach Adrian Thompson kicked off the day with an insight into the U20’s ‘Planning and Performance’.

“We have recently spent time modernizing our coach development framework which now provides an aligned coach and player pathway. Critical to the development of this framework is providing opportunity and access for coaches”.

“It’s critical to the game and the enjoyment of the game is the development of our Coaches and we’ve identified that across all levels.

"The workshop, is an example of informal development opportunities that we are looking to provide coaches across our pathway”

“The highlight of the day was Allan Gaffney, our elite coach and a technical advisor to the U20’s presented a module on attacking shapes and structures.”

The next ARU Coaching workshop will be held in Sydney on May 22.

The ARU will be running two National Coaching Conferences to be held:

-July 3rd Sydney

-July 7th Brisbane
