Ben begun his work in the Sevens format in 2016 after a stint with the Waratahs U20s squad. A product of Randwick Rugby Club, O'Donnell's pace and skill as an outside back caught the attention of the Australian Sevens program at the Uniroos Sevens in 2016, where he was voted Men's Player of the Tournament.
Debuting in round one of the 2017/2018 World Series, O’Donnell continued on the world series to play in nine of the ten legs. Scoring 175 points in his breakout year, O’Donnell hopes that this form can continue heading into the 2018/2019 HSBC Sevens World Series.
Having a unique Rugby journey, O’Donnell has spent time playing in Spain, before returning to Australia to chase his Olympic dream. His family has no shortage of Rugby pedigree, with Ben’s father, “Midge” having coached New Zealand great, Carlos Spencer.
