But the Lions' attacking barrage proved unstoppable on either side of the break as they cruised home to victory.
Here's what the big names had to say after the win.
“As a team, we just wanted to be better and take a step forward. It wasn't perfect, but genuinely speaking, it was a step in the right direction.
“I think we were a little more clinical and accurate over the ball than last week, and while we still made a few errors, it was better in that regard.
“We have five games in two weeks, so there’s not much time on the training paddock, but loads of games, so you improve and learn more in them than in games, so it’s a blessing in disguise.”
“Fair play to the Reds, they came at us hard in the first half and they were very physical and we knew it was going to be a challenge but we just tried building on everything in the week and the game last week.
“It’s a focus for 80 minutes [to hold out attacks] and we know how hard it’s going to be each game and we’re just trying to build for the next games to come.”
“I think the first half we had the wind and used it well; sometimes you just come up against a better side and that was today.
“I thought their instructions in attack were very good, obviously once they got in the game their defence took a step up and we struggled to get quick ball and our game broke down.
“It was a massive crowd and an awesome experience. It’s a big honour to play them and it’s a great experience.”
“Fair play to the Reds, they came out with a bang and put us under plenty of pressure and they have unbelievable athletes but we just went back to our system and applied the pressure to break them down.
“In the second half, we just wanted to stick to it and keep the pressure and whilst we were sloppy in the first 10 minutes, the offloads started to stick and we got going.”
“It’s special playing in front of my friends, family and this crowd against the Lions, who have some of the best players in the world, it’s an awesome opportunity.
“For me, I was happy to come home [and play for the Reds] and there’s no better game than coming to Suncorp than playing the Lions. For me, it’s about chipping away and being at my best and whatever happens, happens.
“It means everything to put that gold jersey on, so if I get the opportunity, it’ll be good.”
"It's definitely going to be one that I'll cherish for, you know, be able to show my son in years to come.
"I've had an absolute blast here and I'll never forget my time here and it's been some of the best years of my life, to be fair. I've absolutely loved every minute of it."
