Tuggeranong Vikings have ended an eight-year wait for John I Dent Cup glory, holding off a fast-finishing Canberra Royals 27-23 in a thrilling Grand Final at Viking Park on Saturday.
The victory secured the South Canberra club’s first John I Dent Cup premiership since 2018, while putting an end to a string of Grand Final disappointments for the Vikings’ First Grade side.
The Vikings club entered Grand Final Day with a chance to cap a remarkable day across the club, with six teams chasing premierships across the six competitions.
The day began with victory in Fourth Grade, where the Vikings edged the Royals 24-22, before Colts added another flag with a 29-19 win over Gungahlin. There were setbacks in Third Grade, falling 48-17 to Wests, and Second Grade, going down 20-17 to Uni-Norths, while the Premier 15s Women were beaten 33-17 by Gungahlin.
That left First Grade as the Vikings’ final chance to add a third premiership to the club’s Grand Final haul.
Standing in their way was a Royals side that had denied them on the biggest stage just two years earlier.
The last time the two clubs met on Grand Final day, in 2024, the Royals came out victorious, and they threatened to cause the upset once again in 2026, coming with in a single point with 13 minutes remaining.
This time, though, the Vikings built a lead that proved just enough.
The opening exchanges were as tight as expected, with neither side able to crack the other’s defence for 27 minutes.
Then Christian Leali’ifano produced a moment of magic.
The returning club legend showed a glimpse of the brilliance that made him a star for the ACT Brumbies and Wallabies, beating defenders with fantastic footwork to score the opening try and give the Vikings the breakthrough.
For Leali’ifano, the moment carried extra meaning.
A Brumbies and world rugby legend, he returned to the club where he spent much of his early development, and on Saturday he helped deliver the Grand Final moment to his beloved red & white army.
From there, the game opened up.
Royals could only respond through penalty goals, while the Vikings found the try line through fullback, and recently awarded Macdougall Medalist, Oscar Shaw and Fijian international scrumhalf Moses Sorovi to surge to a 21-6 lead at half-time.
Sorovi would ultimately be named man of the match, and his influence was decisive.
The Fijian international produced one of the game’s defining moments when he pounced on a loose ball after the Royals appeared to have shut down another Vikings attack, turning a broken play into points and helping the home side seize control.
But the Royals were not finished.
They came out firing after the break, with Daniel Nelson and Lincoln Smith crossing to breathe life back into the contest.
With the margin narrowing, the pressure mounted on the Vikings as the Royals launched wave after wave of attacks in the closing stages.
Yet there would be no late comeback.
The Vikings’ defence stood firm when it mattered most, holding out the Royals’ final charge to secure a hard-fought 27-23 victory. After years of Grand Final heartbreak, Tuggeranong finally had its premiership moment. For a club that had come so close so many times, there was something fitting about their crowning moment coming against their most bitter rivals.
And as the celebrations rolled on at Viking Park, the sounds of premiership glory echoing from Kambah to Banks, the Vikings can once again call themselves John I Dent Cup champions.
