Queensland Reds halfback Tate McDermott will make his comeback from a seven-month lay-off with University of Queensland on Saturday at St Lucia in the Sumo Energy Hospital Cup.

McDermott will enjoy a bonus with younger brother Flynn also available for the first time this season after returning from a work stint overseas.

For Wallaby McDermott, it is the light at the end of a long tunnel after his diligent rehab to return to full fitness after surgery to reattach his hamstring to the bone.

"I'm really excited. I've never not played for this long. Ever," McDermott said.

"To get the opportunity to wear a different bit of maroon in a UQ jersey is something I'm really excited for."

McDermott will play 40 minutes.
