The Lions cook something special

Maro Itoje will captain the British & Irish Lions for the first time on Australian soil when the tourists run out against Queensland at Suncorp Stadium this Wednesday (July 2).

The England lock returns to lead the Lions' after missing last week's 54-7 victory over the Western Force while star Irish duo Jamison Gibson-Park and Hugo Keenan have also been named for their first outing in the red jersey.

Gibson-Park partners Finn Russell in the halves with Bundee Aki linking with Scotland's Huw Jones in a new-look midfield.

Fullback Keenan is also primed for his first Lions outing with Scotland's Duhan van der Merwe and Englishman Tommy Freeman reprising their wing combo from Dublin's tour opener.

Up front, Irishmen Andrew Porter and Rohan Kelleher reprise their front-row combination with England's Will Stuart in the starting jerseys with Ollie Chessum returning to pair Itoje in the engine room.

Flankers Tom Curry and Jac Morgan have also been recalled following their starting roles in the Lions' 28-24 loss to Argentina and join Irish number eight Jack Conan.

Australian-born tighthead Finlay Bealham joins England duo Ellis Genge and Luke-Cowan Dickie on the pine with Ireland's James Ryan set for his Lions debut and Ben Earl covering the backrow. Alex Mitchell, Fin Smith and Garry Ringrose round out the Lions' bench.

In injury news, Welshman Tomos Williams has been ruled out for the remainder of the Lions' Tour following a grade two hamstring tear sustained during his two-try showing on Saturday.

In a statement, Lions coach Andy Farrell paid tribute to debutants Gibson-Park, Keenan and Ryan and expressed his dismay for Williams.

“We know each game on this Tour will be a step up from the game before and three more players are set to make their Lions debuts on Wednesday night, so congratulations to those guys," Farrell said.

“Unfortunately Tomos has been ruled out of the rest of the Tour with a hamstring injury. Ben White will join us from the Scotland squad and will fly over from New Zealand."
