Australia and New Zealand face off in the Round 1 of the U20 Rugby Championship.

NSW Waratahs centre Zach Fittler has been named at centre as Chris Whitaker makes six changes to face South Africa U20 on Monday (AEST).

Fittler's inclusion at inside centre comes following a shoulder injury to Queensland Reds standout Frankie Goldsbrough, with Josh Takai brought into the squad to replace him.

Goldsbrough damaged his shoulder during a frustrating loss to New Zealand, coming off early in the contest.

Further change in the backline sees Taione Taka start on the wing after scoring off the bench, replacing Cooper Watters.

Watters was facing a suspension after a red card in the Kiwi defeat, however, has been cleared to play for the rest of the tournament after being handed a warning.

"In this instance, the FPRC determined that the actions constituted reckless foul play; however, did not reach the threshold for a red card, and a Warning was deemed appropriate in this case due to mitigating factors," a statement from SANZAAR read.

"A Warning is relevant only for the purposes of a Player’s disciplinary record going forward and does not affect the decisions of Match Officials during a Match."

There is one change to the starting forward pack as Luca Cleverley replaces Marshall Le Maitre, who drops back to the bench.

Cleverley starts at blindside flanker, pushing skipper Tom Robinson to openside.

Whitaker has named three new faces as part of a 6-2 bench split, with Nick Hill and Toby Brial coming into the replacements.

Chayse Geros also slots in to round out the 23, set to finish the game alongside Jonty Fowler.
