The men's side started strong, upsetting a near full-strength Fijian side 29-19, with tournament top scorer and Waratahs flyer James Turner scoring a double, before going down to eventual champions New Zealand 35-19.
John Manenti's side bounced back in emphatic fashion on Saturday with a 42-0 drubbing of Tonga before backing up their heroics against Fiji.
The Olympic gold medalists took a late five-point lead before Matt Gonzalez darted over, with World Series leading point-scorer Dietrich Roache nailing the conversion to seal the 26-24 victory.
On their final day of the tournament, they drew level with the All Black Ferns when Uni product Tom Morrison crossed just after the break before Roderick Solo raced the length of the field to score, securing the 17-12 win for the hosts.
They concluded the tournament with a comprehensive 35-7 victory over Tonga thanks to a Dally Bird double and Turner's ninth of the tournament.
Meanwhile, the World Series champion Women started strong as they defeated Black Ferns Pango 21-12.
Two quick tries to Bienne Terita and Teagan Levi got the Aussies off to the perfect start before Levi set up Lily Dick to seal the win.
They followed this up with a thrilling 19-17 win over Fiji. Down by five, Sevens stalwart Shari Williams crossed in the 13th minute to draw scores level, before 17-year-old Jesse Southwell added the extra two for the victory.
Tim Walsh's side couldn't back up their heroics on day two with a 17-12 defeat to Black Ferns Ma. The Kiwis raced out to an early 12-0 lead, with late tries to Maddison Levi and Alysia Lefau-Fakaosilea unable to close the gap.
They bounced back in emphatic fashion, cruising to a 29-5 victory over Black Ferns Pango as they raced in five unanswered tries.
A double to Dom du Toit allowed the Australians to take the 31-14 win over Fiji to set up a grandstand finish against Black Ferns Ma.
Stacey Fluhler got the hosts off to the perfect start two minutes in before Sharni Williams immediately responded. Unfortunately, that would be the last time Australia scored, as the Ma scored 19 unanswered points to win the match 26-5.
