It was five years ago that the decision to change the national eligibility laws proved a game-changer.
Then national coach MIchael Cheika felt he needed Matt Giteau, in particular, for the Wallabies to go deep at the 2015 World Cup.
The Wallabies fell just short, losing to the All Blacks in the final at Twickenham and Giteau, as well as then Toulon teammate Drew Mitchell, both played instrumental roles in their run to the biggest match on the calander.
Not only did they have big match experience, they had played in Europe for years, had won major trophies at Twickenham and, importantly, they were both left-footers in a squad full of right-footers.
Like Cheika, Wallabies coach Dave Rennie has got his wish too for 2020.

“First and foremost, it is crucial that we recognise those players who are currently making a daily contribution to rugby in Australia, and that will be reflected in the squad we name for this year’s Test season," Rennie said in a statement.
“We now have the chance to select one or two players based overseas who don’t meet the current criteria and they’ll not only add some experience to our group but be able to guide our young players to help their development.
“We are also looking long term though. We want to bring players back to play Super Rugby here in Australia, especially those who are passionate about playing for the Wallabies, get them excited about being in the environment again and this is a great way to encourage that."
