NSW and Queensland share the spoils at Youth Sevens

by Rugby Australia

Queensland Red Girls and NSW Blue Boys have been crowned the 2016 Youth National Sevens Champions of the Girls and Boys Championships respectively at McGillivray Oval in Perth, on Sunday afternoon.

QLD Red Girls were clinical in both their finals beating Western Australia in the Semi Final 26-14 and then going on to win the Cup Final with a 22-14 win over NSW Blue.

Their Head Coach Reg Taylor was thrilled with his team’s performance and says the side thoroughly deserved the win.

“It was a long tournament and it was really hot, but the level of play throughout the Girl’s Championship was outstanding. We had a tough tournament and I’m just really proud of the girls.”

“We knew NSW was going to be a tough opponent, they’re a quality side, but we executed our game plan really well and I’m really happy with the team’s performance.”
The NSW Blue Boys team went through the entire championship undefeated and were impressive across the entire weekend. After a tough Semi Final against WA, the visitors came away with a 12-0 win. From there it was all NSW, putting on a stunning performance to beat QLD Red boys 34-0 in the Final.

NSW Blue head coach Gerard McLenaghan says the Championship win is just reward for the amount of work his side has put in coming into the championship.

“I’m very for happy for the team, knowing how much work they put into this. For a lot of us we have been involved in training for the championship for over four months, so to come away with the victory is really thrilling.”

“We really weren’t expecting that result today, after the way Queensland had played all weekend, but I’m very happy with the win and full credit goes to the players.”
In other results Western Australia had their highest ever finish at the National Youth Sevens Championships in both the boys and girl’s division placing third, with the girls comfortably beating the ACT 34-5. The WA Boys side had a hard-earned victory over Victoria 22-7.

NSW White Girls took out the plate for fifth position in a strong 42-0 win over Victoria and ACT boys took home the plate in a 33-14 win over QLD White.
