The Queensland Red women’s team came, saw and conquered at the 2016 National Sevens Championships in Adelaide over the weekend.
The Queenslanders beat arch rivals NSW Blue 29-17 in the final at the Adelaide Shores Sporting Precinct on Sunday to top off a great weekend for women’s Sevens.
They were pipped at the post in the final last year by NSW and several of the squad including national squad members Dom Du Toit and Georgie Friedrichs were keen for a bit of cross border payback.
“I’m absolutely stoked that we got the trophy back on the right side of the border. Happy days for Queensland I guess,” Friedrichs said in the wake of the final win.
Du Toit and Friendrichs are part of Tim Walsh’s national team squad and loved the fact that they could go part to their Rugby roots over the weekend in Adelaide.
“Yeah it was back to where it started, where I first started playing Rugby,” she said. “(It was great) I got to play with all my friends.”
Friedrichs was named player of the tournament and the award was presented by her national team mentor Walsh.
“Little bit of celebration here and then it’s back into preparations for the start of the Word Series in Dubai next month,” she added.
Australian Universities won the Bowl while NSW White won the Plate competition.
