The Australian Women’s Sevens have added another trophy to their cabinet, named the A-Team of the year at Wednesday night’s I Support Women in Sport Awards.

Two months on from the Rio Olympics, the award is the latest in a series of honours for the gold medallists, who have inspired many young women to take up rugby sevens.

The I Support Women in Sport awards are an initiative from Women’s Health magazine to recognise excellence in female athletes.

Aussie Sevens coach Tim Walsh said the gong would hopefully continue to grow the profile of rugby sevens.

"On behalf of the entire squad and management I would like to thank the 2016 I Support Women in Sports Awards for acknowledging the team’s hard work and success in 2016," he said.

“The award is a credit to the amazing dedication and talent of every woman in this squad who worked so hard to make the dream of gold medal success a reality.

“We truly hope that the efforts of the Women’s Rugby Sevens team inspire a whole new generation of young women and girls to pick up a Rugby ball, get fit and active and participate in our great global game.”

The Rio winners are back in preseason training ahead of the 2016-17 series opening Dubai Sevens, in which they will face the USA, Russia and a qualifier in the pool stages.
