Australian international flanker Liam Gill has joined the triple European champions Toulon, the French club said on Tuesday.

Scheduled to arrive at the end of July, ongoing negotiations with Australia's coach Michael Cheika pushed back the signing, which is still subject to a full medical.

"It was a complicated process, it was something between the Australian head coach and myself, we found common ground and luckily  was able to come over and fulfil my contract out here which is something I'm super excited to be a part of." said Gill.

Due to his transfer to France Gill will be unable to feature for his nation because of Australian Rugby union rules on selecting players who play their club rugby outside Australia.

"No, I'm not retiring just having a two year window where I get to experience different rugby and a change of scene, and hopefully make myself a better player on my return to Australia. I really want to give European rugby a chance and enjoy my time at Toulon." continued Gill.

The young talent has a promising future with fellow countrymen at Toulon not playing a major part in his decision to move to the south of France.

"I spoke to them a little bit, but I didn't really need much confirmation, it's a huge opportunity for me to come and play for Toulon."

The Australian knows he will have to face tough competition for a starting place in Diego Dominguez squad.

"Hopefully I get the opportunity to show the coaches and the fans what I can do as a player, as a flanker, and give it as best shot as I can. I understand that it's a different style of Rugby in France but I'm confident and I'll throw everything I can at being successful for Toulon."

Gill still needs to complete some paperwork and technical formalities including his medical test before his contract is confirmed. He will most probably not feature for the start of the Top 14 on Sunday but should be able to feature the week after.
