Wallaby fullback Israel Folau's move to Japanese club NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes may not happen after they were relegated from the Top League, a report said Wednesday.
Folau signed a one-year contract with a one-year option in 2015 with the Osaka-based side but did not play last season due to an ankle injury.
Folau now needs to decide if he wants to be a part of Japan's second tier.
"It wasn't concrete whether I was going or not regardless of whether they were in the top division or not," he told The Australian newspaper of the one-year option.
"It's still up in the air. Still need time to think about it. Nothing is sure at the moment."
When the NSW Waratahs star signed last July, reports said he would earn around Aus$700,000 ($503,000) a season in Japan, with the league running between August and February.
"At the moment I'm not even thinking about it. My focus at the moment is on Super Rugby and what's coming ahead," added Folau.
"Obviously, it would've been nice to be playing in the Top League, that's for sure, but for me it's something I can't control."
Folau has returned to full fitness this season having made the switch from fullback to outside centre with the Waratahs and played every game this season.
If Folau was to join the Japanese Top League it wouldn't be until after the 2017 Super Rugby season having already commitment to the Wallabies Grand Slam tour in November.
The Wallabies have attempted nine Grand Slam tours in their history, having not completed a successful Grand Slam tour since 1984.
