Irish stalwart Brian O’Driscoll has topped this week’s rugby.com.au poll as fans’ choice to Captain the British & Irish Lions when they Tour to Australia for the first time in twelve years this June.

O’Driscoll received 50% of votes, a clear majority over the five other choices in this week’s rugby.com.au poll which asked fans who should Captain the British & Irish Lions on the Tour to Australia this year.

O’Driscoll appeared in all three Test matches during the last British & Irish Lions Tour to Australia in 2001. His most notable achievement occurred during the first Test at the Gabba when he scored an amazing try after receiving a Jonny Wilkinson pass and running past several Wallaby defence, which put the Lions ahead of Australia by 17 – 3.

Rumours surrounding his place in this year’s Lions squad have been circulating as questions about his impending retirement are still yet to be confirmed. It is assumed if the powerful number 13 is fit he will be named as a Lion once more, which would be a fitting end to his potential Rugby retirement.

Sam Warburton who was part of the recent Wales side to quash England’s Six Nations Grand Slam dream received the second highest amount of fans’ votes on 30%. The notable flanker and former Captain of the Welsh side has been named on many prospective Lions squad lists.

Chris Robshaw, who captained England during the final Six Nations loss was third with 10% of votes, followed by Scottish Captain, Kelly Brown on 5%, former Welsh Captain Ryan Jones on 4% and finally Ireland’s most recent Captain, Jamie Heaslip on 1%.

Speculation will be resolved soon as the Captain of this year’s British & Irish Lions squad is set to be confirmed at the end of this month when the official announcement takes place on April 30.

Fans can continue having their say in the weekly rugby.com.au poll. This week we’re asking fans who should Captain the Qantas Wallabies during this year’s British & Irish Lions Tour to Australia? Will Genia, James O’Connor, Ben Mowen, Dave Dennis, Matt Hodgson or James Horwill. Have your say now.
